Happy Monday News- Video: Incredible story of how abandoned dog helped disabled boy overcome fear of outside world

Wanted to get your Monday started on a Happy and uplifting note!

Saw this article in my weekly newsletter from Therapy Fun Zone

I really enjoyed reading this article and seeing the great video because it highlights an important part of pediatric therapy, which isn’t just about increasing a child’s mobility but also increasing their participation with their daily life activities.  I love how the article focuses on how having a dog companion really allowed Owen to leave his house again and enjoy being a kid.

Once our patients reach school-age, therapy becomes less about moving around and more about participating in age-related activities and being with friends with the least amount of limitations as possible.

Highlights from the article:

Owen Howkins, 7, suffers from Schwartz-Jampel syndrome, a condition which leaves his muscle in a permanent state of tension.

The youngster said his life changed when his parents adopted Haatchi, a three-legged Italian shepherd who survived being hit by a train after thugs tied him to a railway line.

‘Before his arrival, Owen didn’t like going out – he was practically agoraphobic,’ his mother Colleen Drummond told the Basingstoke Gazette.

‘Owen used to be scared of strangers, but now he wants to talk to everyone about Haatchi and wants to go out all the time to dog shows. The difference we see in him can’t be put into words.’

Here’s the video, it’s 10 minutes long but worth it!
